Wednesday

charcoal sweater (gift) -- black skirt (BR, thrifted) -- black scarf (husband's closet) -- black boots (liz claiborne, consignment)

I think this is going to be my “go to” outfit the next few months. It is comfortable and warm and right now more flattering than my too tight jeans! I especially love this scarf — it is a man’s chunky scarf, I only wish it were even bigger and chunkier!!!

Also, while I would like Guerlain’s kohl, at $36 it is not practical, so I tried Loreal’s HIP kohl liner today since it was on sale at Walgreens (BOGO). I was scaring myself taking pictures, but I’ll post one anyway:

I am going to try to return the Loreal cream eyeliner though (i had rubbed most of it off the top of my lashes for this picture) it didn’t look good at all. That was my sub for the Bobbi Brown eyeliner I’ve always wanted.

I’m trying to create a smudgy smokey look, so maybe I’m better off trying eyeshadows, which I have never worn.

I ended up returning both products. I felt self conscious running errands today and even picking up the kids at school — it just doesn’t suit me. You can’t tell in this picture how dark it is, but I felt a little like a street walker! So back to softer smudgy browns for me, plus it saved me some money.
Menu:
Breakfast: small dish whole milk yogurt with raisins; cafe au lait
Lunch: 1/2 sandwich with turkey, provole, jack daniels honey mustard horseradish; few baby carrots, hunk of mozzarella
Dinner: creamy tomato pasta; romaine salad with avocado; no wine*

I get a migraine every month, like clockwork, in connection with my cycle and hormones. I can actually tell what day it will come. I knew it was going to happen today and sure enough — boom. I usually like to skip my wine with dinner on days when I have a headache. I always feel out of sorts with Excedrin Migraine in my system and for some reason wine just doesn’t appeal to me that much on these days only.

Wow your eyes are so pretty! I have always wanted to use kohl but have been afraid that it will look too strong on me… Hope the migraine goes away soon xo

Kajal eyeliner by Stila is the softest pencil liner I’ve tried, and it smudges well. At $18 I’m not sure it’s worth the price, but if you have a Sephora near you (or any place that sells Stila), you could go and try it out. I’ve also tried Wet n’ Wild (do not laugh!) for $1.99 and it also works pretty well.

DC, Thanks. It looked too strong on me, too. You can’t tell in the picture, but I looked like Gyweneth Paltrow that one really bad oscar year -2002 — with the see through black gown and the too strong eye makeup!
A, I do have a Sephora close by. I should at least try it there, maybe ask for some help to achieve the look. How do you smudge it once you put it on? thx

I can see why you might not like the effect of the kohl. Your eyes are very light. As you know, I line my waterline with Guerlain kohl and love it — but I have dark eyes, and somehow it just looks natural rather than overdone. Sounds like you know what looks best on you; glad you were able to return the duds to the store!

    Ugh, migraines. Feel better!

Marsi, you’re right. I think it’s the contrast — I bet I would like it better with darker eyes … I bet it looks so great on big brown eyes like yours.

Your eye color is so pretty though!

    K,

One thing I like for smokier eyes is to use an eyeliner brush and a soft black and brown shadow mixed together. The brush helps you apply the shadow close to your lash line so it looks like eyeliner only mush softer…then use a bit of shadow on an eyeshadow brush to go over the line and blend the color up onto your lid just a little.

Really like the skirt/tights/boots combination [possibly because it's very similar to my style] – maybe you’ll be lucky [like I was for once :) ] and find a pair of black wool tights at a thrift store. Keeps me warmer than jeans [I'm in a northern state too]. I wear them over cotton/lycra tights for extra warmth (and to keep the wool a layer away from my skin – the two often don’t like each other).

    And pretty eyes, too.

Jade, I want black wool tights — you’re right that would be perfect over the other ones. (I do double up my tights)
What brand do you recommend? I have never looked for tights at the thrift store, I’m not sure my two favorite stores carry them …. great idea! thanks.

If you could find SmartWool brand they’d be the best – still kicking myself for passing up a new pair on sale for less than half-price over the summer. Mine are actually called SoftWool which I’m sure is a rip-off of the SmartWood brand. Still, my cheapo ones are holding up well even with a lot of wear. Size-size they’re a little long but not enough to be a problem. I think I paid somewhere between $1-$5 for mine but if you can’t find any really cheap, remember: don’t think of them as tights – think of them as pants, because that’s what they are actually replacing.

Jade, thanks so much for responding. I’ll definitely look for some.

What is it about those Italian women? You know the ones I’m talking about: beautiful, sexy, dressed to the nines just to take the kids to the park. They have a certain something that is indefinable. It is in the way they dress, the way they prepare their meals, the way they spend their leisure time.

It is because they know the importance of la bella figura. Roughly translated from Italian, it means putting you best foot forward in everything you do. It means cutting a beautiful figura. The opposite of la bella figura is la brutta figura, which is what someone might say about the falling down drunken guy at the party or the super tackily dressed woman at church. It means ugly figure.

La bella figura is much more than your appearance. It goes much deeper than that. It is about how you act. It is about how you treat others. It is about how you care for yourself, your home and your family. Living a life in line with la bella figura doesn’t take money. In fact, it is more about how to have class without a lot of money.

Someone who exudes la bella figura will have clean, pressed clothes and be well groomed. They will not be rude or sloppy. Their fingernails will be impeccably groomed. Their hair shiny and clean and their shoes will be polished. They will not have stray threads hanging from their suit hems. They will not be driving a car in need of the car wash.

La bella figura means driving that 15 year old car and meticulously cleaning it and caring for it. It means keeping your belongings in good repair. It means taking time to clean your house and not cluttering it up with meaningless objects.

When you focus all your spare energy, time and money on the things that bring you the most amount of pleasure, then you are truly living a life in line with la bella figura. The best part about it is that you don’t have to be Italian to do so. You just have to think like an Italian.

Italian children are raised to present la bella figura in whatever they do. From the time they are small and are groomed perfectly to attend church or school, they know that appearances count. They count because it is the first thing people judge about you. That first impression does matter. Appearances are also important because when you take the time to look nice, you are showing that you care about yourself. When you care enough to look good, it shows you have good healthy self esteem. Nothing is more attractive than self confidence.

In addition, dressing nice also shows respect for others. If you invite people over for dinner and greet them in flip flops, baggy sweats and a stained shirt, it is really disrespectful to them. The same if you dress sloppy to go to church or even to the market. By dressing nicely and being well groomed, you show respect for everyone in your world.

Having la bella figura means presenting yourself in the best light possible in all your interactions.
