That Pretty Much Sums it Up
Yesterday I was killing time at the bookstore with my daughter. We started across the way at a shoe store and I tried on these:
which were on sale for an incredibly great price.
I loved the way they added some punch to my all black ensemble and asked the clerk to hold them for an hour while I thought about it.
Then my daughter and I went to the bookstore. I found two books in the used book section that I have wanted for a while (Cheri by Collette) and a writing book by John Gardener. (I’m doing a book post later today)
But anyway, we went to the counter to pay and then started toward the car.
My daughter asked: “But mama, what about the shoes?”
and I said: “Honey, I’d rather buy books than shoes.”
The less I spend on shoes, the more I can eventually spend on books and other things that continue to inspire me artistically and spiritually.
That pretty much sums it up for me.

I’m with you Kristi. I am happy to wear the clothes I’ve got over and over, but always have my eye out for books at the Salvation Army or ones on my list in sales.
I’m the same way – books first, always!
I love it and just think of the lesson your children will learn form you watching examples like this.
Great teaching opportunity! I always put things on hold so I can think especially when it is not something on my need or lust wish list. I agree with you because I always choose books over clothes and shoes!
I had to read your post twice—I thought those shoes were for your daughter! I think I had a pair of little blue sandals just like that when I was a little kid. It was a nice moment for you and your daughter to pick the books over the shoes. I think you’ll later still feel great about your decision, especially because I don’t think they were your style anyway, no matter how great the price!
Fiona, Stephanie, Cherie and Robin,
Kindred spirits like you make me keep sharing myself through this blog!
Can’t help but feel singled out here!
TINE! Oh my gosh. Sorry about that — your post actually came in after the others (by looking at the time it looks like it was right when I was posting and I probably just hit reply and changed pages)
Of course you know you are a kindred spirit — I’m still looking forward to hanging out with you in Boston one day for a drink!

PS Your comment was funny — I think you are right, they really aren’t my style but I do need to branch out. When I look in my closet it is always black, black black!
Haha! I love this story. Kindred spirits indeed. When it comes to closet purging, I have a harder time letting go of a book than a clothing item (books line the top shelves of my closet).
Oh my gosh, I TOTALLY agree! I ask for Borders gift cards for gifts, not clothing store gift cards. (My brother apparently got the fashion gene and not me!) Books are my friends…clothes? Not so much.
