Effortless

As I dress recently, I have been trying to achieve a look that appears effortless. This seems to be my main goal when I analyze my outfits lately. I don’t want to appear that I am trying too hard. I hope this outfit captures that mood. I tried to make it appear effortless by leaving the tee untucked, having the longish sleeves hang out of the blazer, taking off additional jewelry I had on, etc. My new mantra is: Simple is elegant.

K, you look great. LOVE the addition of the scarf in the second pic; what a beautiful gift. And your black boots always make the outfit. Have you tried adding a long pendant-type necklace, for another layer of *texture*? Or, instead of the jacket, a longer cami under your tee for a more casual look?

    A,
You’re right, a long necklace would work. I was worried about having too many accessories, but I think that could add some interest … thanks … : )
    DC,
    thank you
    Jacki,
how sweet of you to stop by. I hope you and everyone else had a wonderful Christmas!

Have you considered knotting the scarf a different way? In your 2nd picture it looks like its cutting you off at the neck. I see the skin of your face, then a black band of fabric and then open skin from the v-neck which kind of makes it look like your chest is still bare and missing something, even though you have a scarf on. I like to wear scarves that you fold in half, and then put the scarf around your neck and pull the loose ends through the loop as I feel it reduces the look of a bare chest.

Tine, I actually wore the scarf that way when I went outside to go to mass yesterday. Really for necessity more than anything as it was about 28 degrees out. I was just sort of fooling with the scarf in that picture. I love it, but I really love GIGANTIC scarves much more — ones that I can wrap and wrap around my neck a dozen times. Are you still enjoying Entre Nous? I think the other book I liked as much as it was “French Women Don’t Sleep Alone” by Jamie Cat Callan. They both have such interesting takes on being an interesting woman!

It’s working for you! I have a few accessories that I can always throw on and it’s effortless. I don’t have to worry about adjusting them or if they look right, they always do. It’s so nice when you find those pieces. That’s a beautiful scarf.

I love the book! I haven’t been reading too much though as I am in Connecticut visiting my family and have been busy spending time with them. When I get back to Boston I have a few days off and will probably finish the book!

You mentioned gigantic scarves that you can wrap and wrap…have you seen this infinity scarf? It’s kind of cool – I’m trying to decide what I can make one from.

What is it about those Italian women? You know the ones I’m talking about: beautiful, sexy, dressed to the nines just to take the kids to the park. They have a certain something that is indefinable. It is in the way they dress, the way they prepare their meals, the way they spend their leisure time.

It is because they know the importance of la bella figura. Roughly translated from Italian, it means putting you best foot forward in everything you do. It means cutting a beautiful figura. The opposite of la bella figura is la brutta figura, which is what someone might say about the falling down drunken guy at the party or the super tackily dressed woman at church. It means ugly figure.

La bella figura is much more than your appearance. It goes much deeper than that. It is about how you act. It is about how you treat others. It is about how you care for yourself, your home and your family. Living a life in line with la bella figura doesn’t take money. In fact, it is more about how to have class without a lot of money. Many guys who aspire to be a PUA are actually pursuing the La Bella Figura Lifestyle.

Someone who exudes la bella figura will have clean, pressed clothes and be well groomed. They will not be rude or sloppy. Their fingernails will be impeccably groomed. Their hair shiny and clean and their shoes will be polished. They will not have stray threads hanging from their suit hems. They will not be driving a car in need of the car wash.

La bella figura means driving that 15 year old car and meticulously cleaning it and caring for it. It means keeping your belongings in good repair. It means taking time to clean your house and not cluttering it up with meaningless objects.

When you focus all your spare energy, time and money on the things that bring you the most amount of pleasure, then you are truly living a life in line with la bella figura. The best part about it is that you don’t have to be Italian to do so. You just have to think like an Italian.

Italian children are raised to present la bella figura in whatever they do. From the time they are small and are groomed perfectly to attend church or school, they know that appearances count. They count because it is the first thing people judge about you. That first impression does matter. Appearances are also important because when you take the time to look nice, you are showing that you care about yourself. When you care enough to look good, it shows you have good healthy self esteem. Nothing is more attractive than self confidence.

In addition, dressing nice also shows respect for others. If you invite people over for dinner and greet them in flip flops, baggy sweats and a stained shirt, it is really disrespectful to them. The same if you dress sloppy to go to church or even to the market. By dressing nicely and being well groomed, you show respect for everyone in your world.

Having la bella figura means presenting yourself in the best light possible in all your interactions.
